Weak Airflow
Weak air from the vents? Find out what is restricting it.
The system runs, you hold a hand to the vent, and there is hardly anything coming out. Or the air used to be strong and has faded over a season. Either way, less air is moving than the system was built to move.
Sometimes it is one room that never gets enough air while the rest of the house is fine. One room is a different question from a weak system, and it starts with a phone call, covered further down this page.
Weak airflow is a measurable condition, and the cause sits somewhere in the air path, from the return grille to the supply vents.
What restricts airflow
- A clogged filter, or a high resistance filter in a rack too small for it.
- A dirty indoor coil or blower wheel.
- Return air undersized for the system, so the blower cannot pull enough air in.
- Supply ducts that are crushed, kinked, disconnected, or too small.
- A blower speed set below what the system needs.
Start with the filter. If a clean one does not bring the airflow back, the restriction is somewhere you cannot see.
What the SystemIQ Evaluation measures
The evaluation measures total system airflow and static pressure. Together they show how much air the system is actually moving and how hard the duct system is pushing back, which tells us whether the restriction is at the equipment, on the return side, or on the supply side.
It does not measure airflow at individual vents or rooms. When the system numbers point to a distribution problem, room by room airflow testing is a separately quoted follow up, and we will tell you when it is worth doing.
When it is one room or one floor

What does not fix it
Closing vents in other rooms. It raises static pressure and cuts total airflow further.
A bigger system. More capacity does not help when the air cannot get through the ducts.

- Is weak airflow bad for the system?
- Yes. A system moving too little air runs longer, can freeze its coil, and works its blower motor and compressor harder. It is worth finding before it turns into a repair.
- Will a new filter fix it?
- Sometimes, and it is the first thing to try. If a clean filter does not bring the airflow back, the restriction is elsewhere.
- Do you measure every vent?
- Not as part of the evaluation. The evaluation measures total system airflow and static pressure. Vent by vent measurement is separate work, quoted when the evaluation points to it.
- Can you tell me the cause over the phone?
- No. The symptom narrows it. Measurement settles it.
